BRIDGE INTERNATIONALCHILDREN'S CHOIR

Music Education

Our music program is free and open to anyone who is in 1st to 8th grade.
We provide a choral music education program, developing basic music literacy through fun and engaging activities and games. In the Spring the children’s choir sings the American National anthem at Dell Diamond, and in the Fall they sing a concert with a Christmas theme at a local senior center. Our music education is sponsored by generous donors.  Rehearsals are held weekly for 45 min Saturdays. (9:00 to 10:10  am) . Contact info@bicarr.org

It was a perfect spring evening. The strains of America's National anthem filled Dell Diamond ballpark – the customary prelude to a night of Round Rock Express baseball. Not so customary was the children's choir. Most of the singers were Asian American students from Bridge International Christian Academy (BICAwww.bicarr.org).

BICA is a nonprofit organization founded to promote interaction among students and families from diverse ethnic groups in Round Rock and
greater Austin. Dr. Yeonjai Rah, founder and Executive Director, explained why she wanted the children to sing the National Anthem at the ballpark: “I think this can be a good childhood memory of their life in the States. Half of our students stay two to three years in the U.S. I thought an American baseball game would be a unique cultural experience for them as well as providing a fun, family and kid-friendly environment. Round Rock is becoming a more diverse and international area due to the higher education campuses and foreign IT companies located in the area. It was a privilege for the children to perform and we loved adding to the diversity of Round Rock.”

Bridge International Christian Academy meets in a house on the property of the First Baptist Church of Round Rock. BICA provides
Saturday School, a Wednesday after school program, and Summer Camp. The Saturday School is a unique parent cooperative education program
where children learn the Bible, languages, art, music, and recreation. BICA seeks culturally and linguistically diverse families for
involvement in their children’s learning. Yeonjai Rah said, “Our children love to see their mothers and fathers actively engaged in
their learning.  Sometimes these parents had difficulty getting involved in their children’s public school activities due to language barriers. But our international parents are also learning from each other how to raise their children in the U.S.” In 2011 the Saturday School started with seven children and has since grown to a current enrollment of 25.

During the summer the Academy provides a two-week “Camp Narnia” for 1st through 6th grade (June 15-26, 2015). The director stated “I believe that The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is English literature that we can use to tell the Gospel story in a fresh way for children, and to teach reasoning and imagination.” Kathy Nichols, a Narnia curriculum developer, said, “Teaching BICA children writing, critical thinking and Bible truths is the most rewarding work I've ever done. My two older grandsons attended BICA writing camp last summer, and they'll be back for Camp Narnia this year.”

Beth Avery, Board Member, says that she delights in seeing the children grow in their understanding of American culture and anticipates that the well-rounded BICA curriculum will help prepare them to be successful in their future. Bev Bavousett, Board Member, stated that working with BICA has been a win-win situation. “I get to share my organizational and financial skills along with American culture. BICA teachers and children teach me about their Asian culture. It makes my world so much bigger.”
